Visitors to the inaugural Blackpool in Shanghai event were obviously curious as to how the undeniable expertise of Michael Williams and Sandra Wilson from Blackpool joining forces with the Shanghai organising team would prevail. Unsurprisingly it was an unqualified success To the uninitiated western eye China and Shanghai particularly create an air of mystery and all were eager to view the results of this amazing idea. The local organisers, Shanghai Yi Sai Culture Communications Co. Ltd. and the International Special Attractions Ltd are world renowned for presenting spectacular shows around the world. Their obvious experience collaborating with Michael Williams and Sandra Wilson ensured that this mammoth undertaking was carried out with aplomb. Entering the stadium it was staggering to see the transformation of this typical Chinese stadium into an arena resplendent in the Blackpool tradition.

Blackpool China

A huge, magnificently decorated, stage the centerpiece of this oval venue, a large dance floor surrounded by VIP tables and many thousands of seats. The desire to replicate Blackpool was obvious, engaging the famous Blackpool Empress Orchestra under the direction of Ashley Frohlick, daytime and evening panels of western adjudicators and Blackpool scrutineer teams of Estelle Grassby and Nicky Miles. The logistics alone must have been a nightmare but all appeared to have been overcome without apparent difficulty. The Festival ran for five days and encompassed many groups of events from Juvenile to Professional in Ballroom and Latin. Several thousand entries confirmed the outstanding success and the organisers are to be congratulated on the outcome which appeared as perfect as one would expect from the Blackpool name.

Blackpool China

The Blackpool in China welcome banquet, a delightful evening where some one hundred and eighty VIP officials and adjudicators enjoyed a sumptuous dinner while a splendid Cabaret took place, compared inimitably by Marcus Hilton MBE and Andy Liang. Guests welcomed with the music from the Blackpool Empress Orchestra and then received an opening speech from Haiping Ge the CEO of Shanghai Yi Sai Culture Communications Co. Limited outlining how the Blackpool in China event came into being. Then he was joined by Michael Williams from Blackpool who made two special awards to persons who gave great help to the new venture. They were Estelle Grassby from England and Frank Luan a former Latin Champion from China. Later in the evening a third award was made to Julia Fung for her great services to dance. During the dinner the Cabaret took place, shows in Ballroom from Victor Fung and Anastasia Muravyeva, Domen Krapez and Natascha Karabey, Andrea Ghigiarelli and Sara Andracchio whilst in Latin Troels Bager and Ina Jeliazkova, Dorin Frecautanu and Marina Sergeeva, Maurizio Vescovo and Andra Vaidilaite all performing superbly. Formation by teams from Beijing and Guanzhou.

Exhibition from Luka and Jenalyn, Pro/Am from Lina and Liu Xiao and an absolutely beautiful opera aria from Samuel Stopford together with Tracey. Their rendition of Phantom of the Opera was really the talk of the evening. It was a truly special event which all surely enjoyed.

Professional Ballroom Championship: A beautiful final where all performed with excellence. Whilst respectful to all couples’ efforts I would challenge them that in their prior practice were they content with their efforts or were they doing anything to improve for the future? Being happy with one’s efforts is good but they should never be satisfied in the impossible search for perfection.

Victor Fung and Anastasia Muravyeva from the USA became the first ever winners in all dances of the Blackpool in China Professional Ballroom Championship in Shanghai. Of course confidence breeds success and success breeds confidence. If the latter is correct then they should have a greater degree of confidence and trust that they should go for an increase of impact and performance. They danced consistently throughout the competition displaying a high level of quality.

Runners up in all dances from England Andrea Ghigiarelli and Sara Andracchio. They certainly give all in the confidence area. They used their ability in flight of movement to traverse this huge floor with great ease and certainly challenged strongly for the title. They must look for an improvement in foot positions generally and head positions for Sara.

Taking third place in all dances, from Germany, Domen Krapez and Natascha Karabey who display an enviable imagery on the floor. Their quest should be in musicality to enhance their natural attributes. Of course they will say not so, but I feel they were dancing for third place.

From Russia, fourth in all dances were Stanislav Zelianin and Irina Cherepanova. They seem to be continuing their noticeability in these major events. Always a high level of performance is on view. At times their efforts to maintain picture appears to retract their freedom of movement. They should consider the natural activities of movement and trust that this will not disturb the silhouette.

Fifth in all dances, from Ukraine and new to the Professional field, were Stas Portanenko and Nataliya Koliada.

Their upgrade to Professional competitions appears to have released them from previous excess of tension. A greater consideration of the fundamental values can only reap rewards. There are times when Stas puts too much pressure on Nataliya, resulting in shoulder tension.

Sixth in all dances Denis Donskoy and Maria Kerentseva from Russia. They will be delighted with their inclusion in this important final. Another couple who display the required picture of glamour. A greater degree of body weight in relation to co-ordination of leg action would bring them into greater contention for future events.

I think all couples in this inaugural event enjoyed the conditions, large floor, fantastic orchestra and a most enthusiastic audience. I feel sure all will eagerly wait for next year's event.
